Welcome to Soft Landings, a joint initiative between BSRIA, the Usable Buildings Trust and the Darwin Consultancy, that enables a graduated handover for new and refurbished buildings. The Soft Landings project will result in a set of procedures and worksteps for project teams to stay engaged with buildings after practical completion. Soft Landings aims to:

  • Change attitudes and practices which can make briefing, design and construction more performance-driven
  • Enable project teams to hand-hold and guide building occupants during the intial period of occupation
  • Take proper account of how buildings actually work and how people want to use them
  • Fine-tune and de-bug buildings and their systems in the light of initial experience
  • Provide a framework vwhere the results of post-occupancy energy analysis and occupant satisfaction surveys can be used to improve the performance of a building
  • Close the loop between design aspiration and reality, so that designers and constructors can learn what works and what needs more attention
